Ukunda is located on the south-east coast of Kenya, approx. 30 km south of Mombasa in direction of Tanzania.

For the teachers at Gombato Secondary School providing children with the compulsory school meal used to be a real hazard: As they only had a kitchen hut with flints at their disposal, they would often suffer severe burns on their arms while preparing the meals. Consequently, the school planned to erect a kitchen as an extension of the school building. The donated money was used to purchase the kitchen furnishings, namely a double sink unit with a large drainer, a large double-burner gas stove on a solid iron frame, and a gas cylinder. The Committee’s donation was handed over on site by Anka Seela from Freising, Germany.

The school is being expanded one classroom at a time by the students’ parents who work with donated building material. In addition to new classrooms, they have so far built a toilet block and the new kitchen. Construction is supervised by a German hotelier who frequently donates building material and makes sure that donations are actually used for upgrading the school.
